Marsupials
Carole Jenkins

The grammatical errors in this passage are intentional.

1 When people think of kangaroos, they often picture a baby kangaroo 1peeking out of its mothers’ pouch. Animals that carry their young in pouches are a kind of mammal called a marsupial. Although the kangaroo is probably the most well known, 2there are many others that live in various parts of the world. Kangaroos live in Australia and come in many sizes. Wallabies are the smallest and are about the size of a rabbit. 3Large kangaroos may way as much as 200 pounds and may reach a height of seven feet. Baby kangaroos are called joeys and are only about an inch long when they are born. 4A joey may live, and develop in its mother’s pouch for as long as 6 months. Kangaroos live in groups called mobs. They are basically very timid animals and 5exscape from their enemies by jumping away on their strong and powerful hind legs. They are vegetarians with sharp teeth to eat grasses and foliage close to the ground.

2 6The only marsupial that lives in the United states is the opossum. Opossums range from Canada to South America. They hang from trees by their long scaly tails. Baby opossums are about the size of a small bee and are born before they are fully developed. The mother’s pouch protects a baby opossum for about two months as it grows and develops. After that, it clings to her back for several more weeks. Another marsupial, the bandicoot, lives in Australia and New Guinea. Bandicoots can be as large as a rabbit or as small as a mouse. Most marsupials have 7pouches that open at the top but the bandicoot’s pouch opens at the bottom.

3 The cuscus lives in New Guinea, Indonesia, and northern Australia. It is about the size of a house cat and is 8covered with fur to the tip of its coarse, scaly tale. The cuscus is a nocturnal animal and lives in trees.

4 Tasmania is an island south of Australia and is 9the home of two marsupials the wombat and the Tasmanian devil. Some people think that wombats make good pets. They are about three feet long and live in borrows. As nocturnal vegetarians, they feed at night on leaves, roots, and vegetables. Tasmanian devils, on the other hand, are savage and do not make good pets. They resemble small bears, and they kill and eat other animals.

5 10Although marsupials are alike in carrying their young in an external pouch, they are different in many ways. Their habitats, their size, their eating habits, and their personalities are different. Even so, marsupials are some of the most interesting animals in the world.

They are about three feet long and live in borrows.

In this sentence from section 4, there may be a mistake in punctuation, capitalization, or spelling. If you find a mistake, choose the answer that corrects the mistake. If there is no mistake, choose ‘Correct as is.’
A) Correct as is.
B) They are about three feet long and live in burrows.
C) They are about three feat long and live in borrows.
D) They are about three feet long and, live in borrows.

Which sentence uses capitalization correctly?

I asked my neighbor if She would pick up my mail while I am out of town.
The detective said, “If you see or hear anything, please don’t hesitate to call me.”

Answers

Answer:

The detective said, “If you see or hear anything, please don’t hesitate to call me.”

Fourth choice

Explanations for each sentence:

I think my Aunt should consider calling ahead to see if we can get a reservation.

"Aunt" doesn't need to be capitalized because it's not a proper noun. For example, "aunt" needs capitalization if you said: I think Aunt Lisa....... because "Aunt Lisa" is a proper noun.

My High School has been taking a field trip to a farm outside of Iowa City for years.

"High School" doesn't need to be capitalized because it doesn't have the specific name of a high school.

I asked my neighbor if She would pick up my mail while I am out of town.

"She" doesn't need to be capitalized. Pronouns (which replace a noun) don't need to be capitalized unless the pronoun is "I".

The detective said, “If you see or hear anything, please don’t hesitate to call me."

The correct capitalization is used here. The tricky words might be "detective", which is lowercase because there is no specific detective name. The word "If" is capitalized because it's the first word in the quotation.

The correctly capitalized sentence is 'The detective said, "If you see or hear anything, please don't hesitate to call me."' because it adheres to standard capitalization rules, which include capitalizing the first word of a sentence and proper nouns.

The question asks us to identify the sentence with correct capitalization. According to the rules of capitalization, we always capitalize the first word of a sentence, proper nouns, titles when they precede personal names, and the pronoun 'I'. Here are the corrections for each sentence:

'I think my Aunt should consider...' - 'Aunt' should not be capitalized unless it is part of a proper noun or directly used as the name of the aunt, e.g., Aunt Mary.'My High School has been taking...' - 'High School' should not be capitalized unless it is part of the name of a specific school.'I asked my neighbor if She would pick up...' - There is no need to capitalize 'She' in this context.'The detective said, "If you see or hear anything, please don't hesitate to call me."' - This sentence is capitalized correctly.

Therefore, the sentence that uses capitalization correctly is:

'The detective said, "If you see or hear anything, please don't hesitate to call me."'

Re: Customer Service Representative Opening (Ref. ID: CS300-Denver)

Dear Ms. West:

I was excited to see your opening for a customer service rep, and I hope to be invited for an interview.

My background includes serving as a customer service associate within both call-center and retail environments. Most recently, I worked on the customer service desk for Discount-Mart, where my responsibilities included handling customer merchandise returns, issuing refunds/store credits, flagging damaged merchandise for shipment back to vendors and providing back-up cashiering during busy periods.

Previously, I worked within two high-volume customer-support call centers for a major telecommunications carrier and a satellite television services provider. In these positions, I demonstrated the ability to resolve a variety of issues and complaints (such as billing disputes, service interruptions or cutoffs, repair technician delays/no-shows and equipment malfunctions). I consistently met my call-volume goals, handling an average of 56 to 60 calls per day.

In addition to this experience, I gained considerable customer service skills during my part-time employment as a waitress and restaurant hostess while in high school.

I also bring to the table strong computer proficiencies in MS Word, MS Excel and CRM database applications and a year of college (business major). Please see the accompanying resume for details of my experience and education.

The brown bear (sometimes called a grizzly in North America) is a large animal, usually dark brown in color, though it can vary from a light creamy shade through to black. The long guard hairs over the shoulders and back are often tipped with white, which, from a distance, gives the animal a grizzled appearance. The brown bear is characterized by a distinctive hump on the shoulders, a slightly dished profile to the face, and long claws on the front paws.

Choose the sentence which concisely combines the information in the passage in parallel form.
A) Brown bears have distinctive humps on their shoulders, a dished profile to their faces; their front paws have long claws.
B) The brown bear has a distinctive hump on the shoulders, a slightly dished profile to the face, and its front paws have long claws.
C) The brown bear is characterized by a distinctive hump on the shoulders, a slightly dished profile to the face, and long claws on the front paws.
D) The brown bear is characterized by a distinctive hump on the shoulders, has a slightly dished profile to the face, and long claws on the front paws.

Answers

C. The brown bear is characterized by a distinctive hump on the shoulders, a slightly dished profile to the face, and long claws on the front paws.

Is the answer.

Answer:

The answer is indeed letter C) The brown bear is characterized by a distinctive hump on the shoulders, a slightly dished profile to the face, and long claws on the front paws.

Explanation:

For a structure to present parallelism, it must repeat a certain grammatical form inside the sentence. Parallel structures are used to create consistency in a series of words and phrases and to express more than just one idea in a single sentence. They help to to avoid confusion, making the speech clear, interesting, and easy to be understood.

The best option to answer this question is letter C. It is the only option that presents parallelism. After "The brown bear is characterized by", the speaker lists three characteristics as objects of the preposition. The first one is "a distinctive hump on the shoulders", which could be mainly divided into adjective + noun + noun, indicating a feature of the bear and where in its body it is found. For the structure to be parallel, the next two characteristics must follow the same track, which they do: "a slightly dished profile to the face, and long claws on the front paws." Again, both characteristics can be roughly divided into adjective + noun + noun and, once more, they indicate a feature and where in the body it is found.
