Answer:

E. The moral principles of the Bible are diametrically opposed to slavery.

Explanation:

Samuel Sewall was a Massachusetts judge, best known for his involvement in the Salem witch trial for which he later apologized, and his essay The Selling of Joseph, which criticized slavery.

Although inexpressive, one of the earliest manifestations contrary to the known slave system, it appeared in America when it was still a British colony through the writings of the puritan Samuel Sewall. In his anti-slavery pamphlet, "The Selling of Joseph," published in Boston in the year 1700, Sewall cites passages from the Bible to condemn trade and slave practice. However, in spite of his daring, in offering evidence of these evils he threw aside segregationist and racist thoughts, highlighting the prejudices of his day.

Based on his transcendental beliefs Thoreau most likely believed that the state ?

Answers

Thoreau believed that the state should not interfere with individual morality, advocating for individual integrity over societal conformity and peaceful resistance to unjust government actions.

Based on his transcendental beliefs, Henry David Thoreau most likely believed that the state should not impose upon the individual, particularly when the state's actions conflicted with an individual's morality and connection to nature. Thoreau emphasized the importance of personal integrity over societal conformity, especially in his essay "Civil Disobedience", where he advocates for peaceful resistance to unjust government actions. His transcendental views assert that individuals have the right and duty to follow their inner compass, a view drawn from the idea that each person is capable of discerning the divine or truth through personal intuition, rather than through societal institutions or political edicts.

Can you read my story and help me enhance my writing?: (1st half)

I felt the wind slap my face as I ran to catch the bus. As the bus was turning onto the main road, 290th Street, it finally stopped at the red light. I hauled my bags up the steps and down the aisle. After a while, we finally pulled up at school. As I walked into my classroom, all the eyes focused on me. I didn't see any familiar faces. I searched for my seat and sat down. There were two boys at my table. The boy on my right had blond hair. He was wearing a grey t-shirt. The guy on my right had electric blue eyes and wore Cleveland Cavaliers colored braces. They both shot a glance at each other. The boy on my right introduced himself.

“Hi! My name is Oliver. What's yours?” he asked .

“M, My name is Andrew” I stuttered.

He seemed nice. Throughout all of the periods, we sat next to each other. We also sat next to each other in the cafeteria. As we were eating we talked about ourselves, things such as what we like doing and summer vacation. During recess, I couldn't find him. “He was with me in the cafeteria until I went to go get a drink of water. Where could he have gone?” I thought.

“Um, Oliver. Yo, where are you!” I called.

I finally spotted him and a few other boys huddled up by a pile of leaves in the vast hidden corner of the yard. I glared at them. As I got closer, I guess they could sense me and immediately threw something on the ground, waved their hand in the air and turned around like nothing ever happened. I just stared at Oliver.

“Hey, buddy whats up! Look! The basketball courts look empty. Let's get a game.” he said.

As we were walking he looked back at the horde of boys that were huddled up back there. I was perplexed. I asked him what he was doing back there. He kept on walking in silence. Months passed by. Hot humid air turned into leaves. Blankets of snow covered the ground. My head raced a thousand thoughts. Finally, one hot May morning I finally managed to get the truth out of him.

“Oliver! What's wrong with you!” I exclaimed.

    “What?” he replied.

“C’mon, don't pretend to be clueless. For the past 7 months you have been hiding something from me” I snapped.
“What are you talking about!!?” he shouted.

“You need to stop lying to me or else I’m going to the dean” I mentioned, now angry.

“Fine! You know those other boys by the corner of the school yard?” he asked.

    “Yeah” I responded.

“Well, I uhh, mm go meet up with them to smoke” he gulped.

“SMOKE” I boomed. “I thought you were a clean, nice and responsible guy” I trembled.

I tried to keep my tears and anger inside of me. I walked away, purposely bumping into his shoulder. He tried to argue but I ignored him. I felt my face redden, my body a bomb that's about to go off exploding with anger. I glanced back at Oliver. He just stood there. The next day, in the yard, I saw Oliver being cornered by a bunch of buff, towering boys. I walked over to them. I learned their names by now. Malcolm was their group leader. John, Michael and Charlie were the members. Oliver was too. Again, they sensed me coming.

“Hey! Yo, what do you think you're doing!” he yelled.

As much as I hated Oliver, I needed to help him.

“Nothing of your concern” I came back. “C’mon Oliver, let's go”.

    He didn't budge.

“Oliver won't come unless you agree to smoke with us” John stated.

Malcolm held out his hand. In it was a cigarette. I just stood there. They were just staring, waiting for me to make a decision. It was like their eyes were piercing through my soul. Their eyes were saying “C’mon it's simple! Yes or no! We don't have all day.”. My head throbbed. My heart beat so fast as if it was a formula one car on a rampage. I could feel beads of sweat forming on my forehead. I stared at them, then the cigarette repetitively.

Hi and I can revise it for you. I'll attach the document to your second half.

Final answer:

Enhancing your story involves enriching the descriptive language, deepening character development, and carefully building suspense. Emphasize vivid imagery to draw readers in, explore the complexities of your characters to create an emotional impact, and strategically reveal information to keep your audience engaged until the end.

Explanation:

To enhance your story, consider focusing on creating vivid imagery, developing complex characters, and building suspense. Start by enriching your descriptions to immerse readers fully into the scenes. For example, instead of "I felt the wind slap my face," you might write, "The wind lashed against my skin, as if trying to hold me back with its icy fingers." This not only paints a more vivid picture but also adds a sense of foreboding that can pull readers deeper into the narrative.

Character development is crucial for making your story resonate. Dive deeper into Andrew and Oliver's personalities, backgrounds, and motivations. Show us why Oliver's revelation is so shocking to Andrew beyond their brief encounter. Perhaps hint at Oliver's struggles or Andrew's previous experiences that make this betrayal so impactful. This layering of characters will make the story more compelling and the relationships more nuanced.

Lastly, build suspense to keep your readers hooked. Your story already has a good foundation for this with the mysterious behavior of Oliver and his friends. Gradually reveal clues about what Oliver is hiding, leading up to the climax. This can be through Andrew's observations, conversations overheard, or Oliver's increasingly erratic behavior. The final confrontation will then feel like a satisfying payoff to your readers.

D. This could of been of been a example of hyperbole, if it was rephrased. But the way it is phrased now is not over-exaggerating anything.

9. Who do you believe is the more intelligent character, General Zaroff or Rainsford? Why?

I need help with these guided reading questions for the story, 'The Most Dangerous Game'. Thanks, Matt

Answers

Final answer:

General Zaroff is sophisticated yet sadistic, the title has multiple interpretations, Ivan is a menacing symbol, the flashback explains Zaroff's obsession, and Rainsford's adaptability may mark him as the more intelligent character.

Explanation:

General Zaroff is depicted as a tall, slender, urbane man who exudes refinement but harbors a dark obsession with hunting the most challenging prey: humans. He prides himself on his cultivated manner and his sophisticated tastes, often showcasing his erudition and grace. However, beneath his polished exterior, Zaroff possesses a sinister and sadistic personality, taking delight in the fear and struggle of his human quarry.

The title "The Most Dangerous Game" can be interpreted in various ways. Literally, it refers to the hunting of humans, which Zaroff considers the most dangerous form of sport. Figuratively, it highlights the precarious and lethal nature of the hunter becoming the hunted, as Rainsford finds himself in Zaroff's deadly game. Additionally, it may also comment on the ethical dilemma of valuing human life as mere entertainment.

Ivan, the mute assistant to General Zaroff, serves as an imposing enforcer of Zaroff's rules and a symbol of the ominous and oppressive atmosphere of the island. His silence adds to his menacing presence and the terror he inflicts on those who are to be hunted.

The flashback to General Zaroff's childhood illuminates his past experiences and the development of his proclivity for hunting, providing context for his twisted worldview and his quest for increasingly thrilling hunts.

As for intelligence, it may seem that General Zaroff is more cunning due to his elaborate schemes and self-assurance. However, Rainsford ultimately proves his resourcefulness and adaptability, highlighting that intelligence includes not only knowledge but also the ability to apply that knowledge effectively in life-or-death situations.
